A pinch-hit single by Manny Sanguillen capped a two-run rally in the 10th inning that carried the Pirates to an 8-7 victory over the Padres. With the Bucs trailing, 7-6, Bill Robinson reached first safely on an error by shortstop Ozzie Smith, who had singled home the go-ahead run for the Padres in the top of the inning.

A single by Willie Stargell advanced Robinson to third and a single by Rennie Stennett plated the tying tally. A long fly by Ed Ott moved Ken Macha, running for Stargell, to third, and Stennett to second before Sanguillen's game-winning hit. The Padres had rallied for three runs in the ninth with the tying marker coming across on a wild pitch by Pirate reliever Kent Tekulve. [The Sporting News]
