John Wockenfuss, inserted into the game as a replacement for the injured Mickey Stanley, punched out a single to drive home the winning run in the 10th inning as the Tigers bested the Angels, 4-3. Rusty Staub opened the 10th with a single but the next two batters were retired.

Milt May then got an infield hit and Wockenfuss singled to left to plate the decisive tally. The Tigers trailed, 3-0, early in the game but tied the score in the sixth, runs being driven home on a sacrifice fly by Lou Whitaker, a solo homer by Jason Thompson and an RBI single by May.
