One pinch-hitter struck out but another came through with a two-run single to enable the Cubs to defeat the Padres, 3-1. Randy Jones worked the first seven innings for the Padres and gave up a run on a double by Bill Buckner and single by Bobby Murcer in the seventh. The Padres tied the score against Dennis Lamp in the eighth on singles by Gene Tenace and Ozzie Smith around a sacrifice.

Bruce Sutter took over and was the winner when the Cubs beat John D'Acquisto in the home half of the eighth. Ivan DeJesus and Dave Rader singled and Sutter sacrificed.
