Breaking a 3-3 tie, the Reds erupted for three runs in the seventh inning and defeated the Mets, 6-3. Pete Rose batted safely in his 27th straight game, hitting singles in the first and third innings, to tie the Reds' club record shared by Vada Pinson and Edd Roush. Elliott Maddox, John Stearns and Joel Youngblood homered for the Mets.

Rose's first single of the game drove in Cesar Geronimo, who had doubled, and started the Reds' scoring. The Reds' winning outburst in the seventh began with a single by Ken Griffey and a pass to Joe Morgan.
