Don Sutton, who was seeking his 200th career victory, was accused of pitching a "defaced" ball and was ejected in a game that the Dodgers lost to the Cardinals, 4-1. Chief umpire Doug Harvey banished Sutton after Mike Tyson had flied out in the Cardinals' half of the seventh inning. At the time of his departure, Sutton was losing, 2-1.

Reggie Smith homered for the Dodgers in the first, but they collected only two more hits off Pete Vuckovich during the rest of the game. The Cards tied the score in their half of the first on a single by George Hendrick and double by Ted Simmons before going ahead in the sixth with a single by Garry Templeton, a stolen base and a single by Hendrick.
