Rookie Broderick Perkins hit his first major league homer and two singles, driving in two runs, to lead the Padres to a 5-2 triumph over the Cubs. Perkins hit his homer in the fourth inning and accounted for his other RBI with a single in the Padres' four-run sixth.

Gaylord Perry opened the sixth with a single and reached third on a single by Gene Richards. A sacrifice by Ozzie Smith moved Richards to second and Perry scored on a wild pitch. Perkins' single plated Richards and sent Cub starter Rick Reuschel to the showers. Dave Winfield and Oscar Gamble singled off reliever Donnie Moore to get the third run home and, after an intentional walk, Fernando Gonzalez accounted for the fourth tally of the frame with a sacrifice fly.
