Carlton Fisk led the attack in the opener, driving in five runs with a homer and a double, but the Red Sox catcher had productive company. George Scott accounted for three RBIs with a double and a grounder, while Carl Yastrzemski hit the 375th homer of his career and also batted in a run with a single. The Indians had a two-run double by Johnny Grubb and a two-run homer by Buddy Bell.

In the nightcap, the Red Sox took advantage of a throwing error by Bell and scored two unearned runs in the second. The Indians pulled even with run-scoring singles by Bell and Andre Thornton in the fifth.
