In the second inning, Lance Parrish singled and was forced at second by Alan Trammell. When catcher Gary Alexander threw wildly on an attempted pickoff, Trammell went to third.

After Ron LeFlore walked, Lou Whitaker singled home Trammell. A single by Rusty Staub drove in LeFlore and Whitaker crossed the plate as Thompson bounced into a fielder's choice. Bob Sykes relieved Tiger starter Jim Slaton in the third inning and allowed only one run the rest of the way though he needed help from John Hiller, who pitched a perfect inning and a third to pick up his ninth save.
