A bases-loaded double by Jose Cardenal in the first inning against his former Cub mates triggered the Phillies to a 9-3 victory. Larry Bowa and Mike Schmidt singled in the first. After Schmidt slid into second on the throw to third, he had to leave game with a hamstring injury of his right leg.

Greg Luzinski received an intentional base on balls and Cardenal then smacked the ball into the left field corner to clear the bases. The Cubs cut their deficit to 4-3 in the seventh, but the Phils scored on a two-run double by Bob Boone in the eighth before a three-run homer by Luzinski in the ninth sealed the game.
