Don Sutton highlighted a five-run first inning with a two-run single and then set the Los Angeles strikeout record while pitching the Dodgers to a 7-3 victory over the Braves. The Dodgers routed starter Preston Hanna in the first inning when Bill Russell slapped a one-out double and scored on a single by Reggie Smith. Steve Garvey stroked an RBI single and after a walk to Ron Cey and RBI single by Rick Monday, Sutton knocked in two more with his base hit.

Sutton went into the game tied with Don Drysdale at 2,283 for most strikeouts by an L.A. pitcher and retired five Braves on strikes to become the club's all-time strikeout king in L.A. Drysdale had a career total of 2,486 strikeouts, but 203 came while he was with Brooklyn. [The Sporting News]
