The Cards carried a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the ninth and appeared to have the game won when Jerry Mumphrey threw out John Milner at the plate when he attempted to score on a single by Ed Ott. Ott took second on the throw and scored when Phil Garner singled up the middle on the first pitch by reliever Mark Littell. Willie Stargell's sacrifice fly preceded Garner's RBI hit.
