Joe Rudi, relegated to the bench because of a .193 batting average, came off the boards to smash a two-out pinch-hit grand-slam homer in the seventh inning and lift the Angels to a 5-4 triumph over the Royals, ending the Angels' five-game losing skein. Rudi's clout came off a 3-2 serve from reliever Steve Mingori, who entered the game after starter Dennis Leonard walked the bases loaded.

The Royals had taken an early 9-0 lead with the aid of a solo homer by Hal McRae in the second and a two-run round-tripper by Amos Otis in the third. The Angels broke their streak of 31 scoreless innings in the fourth when Bobby Grich tallied on a wild pitch. [The Sporting News]
