Two errors by shortstop Bill Russell set up three unearned runs for Houston in the first inning, paving the way for the Astros' 5-3 victory over the Dodgers. After Jesus Alou singled in the opening frame, Russell bobbled the throw at second base after Enos Cabell hit grounder to Davey Lopes.

Bob Watson forced Cabell, but Art Howe doubled in Alou. A walk to Joe Ferguson filled the bases and Russell then permitted Jose Cruz' grounder to go through his legs for a two-base error, scoring Watson and Howe. [The Sporting News]
