Led by rookie Clint Hurdle, the Royals edged the Indians, 6-5. Hurdle doubled home the first Royal run in the third inning and scored one of the three other runs the Royals collected in that frame on consecutive RBI singles by George Brett, Hal McRae and Al Cowens.

Hurdle, who extended his batting streak to eight games, walked in the fourth and scored on a double by Freddie Patek. The Royals scored what proved to be the winning run in the fifth on a single by McRae, walk to Cowens, a double steal and a groundout by Joe Zdeb to pin the defeat on David Clyde.
