Increasing their lead in the N. L. East to three games, the Cubs took advantage of Pittsburgh errors to down the Pirates, 6-4, in 10 innings. The score was 3-3 when pinch-hitter Mike Vail opened the top of the 10th by reaching first safely when third baseman Mario Mendoza bobbled his grounder for an error. After Ivan DeJesus sacrificed, Gene Clines was safe at first when first baseman John Milner dropped a throw from pitcher Grant Jackson. Larry Biittner's double scored Rudy Meoli, who ran for Clines, and after Dave Kingman was walked intentionally, Manny Trillo's double plated two more tallies.

The Pirates scored a run and loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the 10th but reliever Willie Hernandez came on to retire Dave Parker on an infield grounder. The Pirates had loaded the bases with one out in the ninth but Bruce Sutter fanned Bill Robinson and got Willie Stargell on a groundout. [The Sporting News]
