Mazzilli opened the inning with a single and advanced to third when Gene Richards fumbled Tim Foli's single into short left. After Ron Hodges lined out, Ed Kranepool drew an intentional walk to load the bases. Randle then singled on the first pitch by Rollie Fingers.
