Jose Cruz led the Astros' 14-hit attack with two triples and two singles, driving in five runs.

After the Cards tied the score at 4-4 in the fourth inning, the Astros broke away with four runs in the fifth, counting one run on a single by Cesar Cedeno, another on an error by Ken Reitz and two on a pinch-single by Denny Walling.
