An error by shortstop Bill Russell with two out in the ninth inning allowed the winning run to score as the Mets came from behind to hand the Dodgers their fifth consecutive loss, 9-8. The Mets, trailing by 8-6 going into the bottom of the ninth, began the winning rally when Willie Montanez smashed a one-out double.

One out later, John Stearns walked and Tim Foli followed with a double just inside the third base line to tie the score. Doug Flynn then hit an apparent inning-ending grounder to Russell, who uncorked a wild throw to first allowing Foli to dash home with the decisive tally. [The Sporting News]
