Continuing his unbeaten streak, Ron Guidry gained his eighth victory when the Yankees defeated the A's, 3-1. The Yanks scored all their runs off John Henry Johnson in the first inning on a pass to Willie Randolph, singles by Lou Piniella and Chris Chambliss, another walk to Graig Nettles and a single by Cliff Johnson.

Guidry, who struck out 11 for his career high, yielded the A's run on a homer by Gary Alexander in the eighth. The A's threatened in the ninth, putting two men on base with one out, but Rich Gossage relieved and fanned Dave Revering and Wayne Gross. [The Sporting News]
