Singles by Amos Otis and Al Cowens plus an error by shortstop Craig Reynolds loaded the bases in the second inning before Darrell Porter cleared them with a double. Porter scored the fourth run of the inning on a single by Frank White. The Royals added a run in the third on a sacrifice fly by Joe Zdeb and four more in the sixth, highlighted by George Brett's two-run double. Brett also doubled home a run in the eighth.
