Ken Reitz received an intentional walk, but Mike Tyson spoiled the strategy with a fly to center that scored Morales.

A single by Bob Forsch moved Reitz to second and a single by Lou Brock added what proved to be the winning run. Buddy Schultz relieved starter and winner Forsch in the eighth to preserve the victory and gain credit for his first save of the season and only the second save of the year for the entire Redbirds' bullpen.
