With a helping hand from Rollie Fingers, who retired the last two batters, Randy Jones pitched the Padres to a 3-1 victory over the Reds. The Padres started the scoring with a run in the first inning on a double by Ozzie Smith, sacrifice by Derrel Thomas and infield hit by Oscar Gamble.

Their winning margin went up on the scoreboard in the fourth. Gamble doubled and scored when Junior Kennedy muffed a grounder by Dave Winfield.
