Taking advantage of sandlot play on the part of the Cardinals, the Expos breezed to an 11-2 victory. The Expos scored seven unearned runs, five of them coming in the third inning on just one hit. That inning began when shortstop Garry Templeton threw a grounder by Larry Parrish into the stands for a two-base error. Ross Grimsley was hit by a pitch and Dave Cash moved the runners along with a sacrifice. Chris Speier was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Del Unser grounded to Keith Hernandez, but the first baseman's throw home was high and Parrish scored. A single by Gary Carter drove in Grimsley. When right fielder Jim Dwyer's throw went through the infield and was mishandled by pitcher John Urrea, two more runs scored. Carter went to third on the error and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly by Ellis Valentine. Templeton's second error of the game led to two more unearned runs in the fourth frame.
