An error by second baseman Mike Tyson opened the floodgates for four unearned runs in the first inning and triggered the Padres to a 7-5 decision over the Cardinals who went down to their sixth straight loss. Derrel Thomas opened the Padres' first with a single and was sacrificed to second. After Gene Richards walked and Dave Winfield struck out, Oscar Gamble, who hadn't had a hit in his last 16 times at bat, slapped a routine grounder to Tyson, who let the ball go through his legs, allowing Thomas to score.

Bill Almon then singled home Richards and a triple by Gene Tenace plated two more runs. A two-run homer by Ted Simmons in the eighth inning pulled the Cardinals to within two runs, but Padre reliever John D'Acquisto slammed the door to preserve the victory. [The Sporting News]
