After a seven-inning bid to become the first Tiger pitcher to throw a no-hitter since 1958, Dave Rozema was struck by disaster and lost to the A's, 3-2. The young rlghthander faced only 21 batters in his no-hit string. Jim Essian, the A's lone base-runner in that stretch, drew a walk in the sixth and was erased on a double play.

Mario Guerrero wrecked Rozema's bid with a bad-hop single off the shoulder of third baseman Phil Mankowski to open the eighth. Dave Revering then teed off on Rozema for a homer to tie the score at 2-2. Unsettled, Rozema issued two walks and, after a sacrifice, passed Gary Thomasson intentionally to load the bases.
