Ron Fairly's third RBI single, coming in the eighth inning, broke a 5-5 tie and the Angels went on to prevail over the Tigers, 7-5. The Tigers had tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, knocking out Angel ace Frank Tanana. Aurelio Rodriguez doubled and scored on Ron LeFlore's single. Dave LaRoche replaced Tanana and yielded a single to Rusty Staub that scored LeFlore, who had stolen second. Jason Thompson's double then scored Staub.

Fairly singled home a run in the fifth and scored on Tony Solaita's home run. Fairly also singled home a run in the sixth. In the Angels' eighth, Rick Miller walked, was sacrificed to second and moved to third on Lyman Bostock's groundout before Fairly pushed a slow ball up the middle for the tie-breaking hit.
