Rallying from an early deficit, the Cardinals scored four times in the fifth inning and went on to defeat the Padres, 8-4. Trailing, 3-2, Ted Simmons began the Cards' fifth with a one-out double and scored the tying run on singles by Jerry Morales and Ken Reitz. When Tony Scott singled to load the bases, Dave Freisleben was replaced on the mound by Mark Lee.

Jerry Mumphrey hit a dribbler in front of the plate which Lee fielded and tossed to catcher Rick Sweet. But Sweet dropped the ball for an error as Morales slid in with the go-ahead run.
