One out later, Reggie Jackson drew a walk and Doug Bird replaced Paul Splittorff on the mound for the Royals. Lou Piniella hit Bird's first pitch for a single to left to score Randolph and bring on another reliever, Steve Mingori.

Mingori was greeted by Chris Chambliss' single up the middle. When center fielder Willie Wilson misplayed the ball, Chambliss reached third and he scored on Graig Nettles' single. The Royals built up an early lead on Yankee bonehead plays: Piniella throwing to the wrong base; Bucky Dent failing to cover on a runner trapped off base and Randolph falling to cover first on a bunt.
