A pinch-hit grand slam by Davey Johnson climaxed a five-run fifth inning and carried the Phillies to an 11-4 rout of the Padres. After Oscar Gamble's two-run homer in the top of the fifth had tied the game for the Padres at 4-4, the Phils started their uprising with a single by Mike Schmidt and walk to Greg Luzinski.

Bob Shirley relieved Randy Jones and after Richie Hebner sacrificed, Garry Maddox was intentionally walked to fill the bases. Bob Boone put the Phils in front with a sacrifice fly and after Jim Morrison walked to reload the bases, Johnson batted for winning pitcher Randy Lerch and cleared the left-center field fence.
