A pinch-single by John Lowenstein in the bottom of the ninth inning capped a two-run rally and gave the Rangers their sixth straight victory, 2-1, over the Red Sox. Bert Campaneris led off the ninth with a single and was sacrificed to second by Al Oliver. Bill Campbell replaced Bill Lee on the mound for the Bosox and was greeted by Richie Zisk's RBI double.

Bobby Thompson ran for Zisk and after Toby Harrah was intentionally walked, Thompson scored on Lowenstein's hit to right. The Red Sox' run came in the fourth when Rick Burleson walked, moved to third on Fergie Jenkins' wild pickoff throw and scored on Jim Rice's sacrifice fly. [The Sporting News]
