Speed paid off for the Giants when Jack Clark scored from second base on a long sacrifice fly to cap a two-run, ninth-inning rally and beat the Padres, 3-2. George Hendrick homered in the sixth to give the Padres a 2-1 lead before their home opening crowd of 45,901.

With one out in the Giants' ninth, Willie McCovey was safe on an error by first baseman Gene Richards. Skip James ran for McCovey and scored the tying run on a double by Clark.
