Although suffering their third successive defeat at the hands of the Tigers, 10-7, the Yankees won their second straight East Division title when the Red Sox lost to the Orioles, 8-7. The Yankees were trailing, 5-1, when rain interrupted the game with the Tigers for two hours and 42 minutes. During the wait, the Yankees watched the Orioles-Red Sox game on their clubhouse TV set and staged a mild celebration when the Red Sox lost before going back on the field to complete their meeting with the Tigers.

The Yankees rallied to go ahead, 7-6, but the Tigers scored twice in both the seventh and eighth innings. In the seventh, Jason Thompson tripled and scored the tying run on an infield grounder by Ben Oglivie, who reached second on a wild throw by George Zeber.
