Wayne Garland, who won 20 games for the Orioles last season, avoided his 20th loss with the Indians by pitching a six-hitter to defeat the Yankees, 4-1, and delay the New York club's clinching of the East Division title. Ed Figueroa, who started for the Yankees, strained a muscle in his left side and left the game after yielding the Indians' first run in the third inning. Alfredo Griffin, who scored it, walked, stole second, took third on a single by Dave Oliver and crossed the plate on a forceout by Larvell Blanks.

Rick Manning homered off reliever Ken Clay in the fourth. A single by Griffin, pass to Jim Norris and single by Oliver added a run in the fifth before the Indians picked up their final marker on an error by Bucky Dent in the seventh.
