Making the first start of his major league career, Charlie Hough pitched five scoreless innings and received credit for the Dodgers' 2-1 victory over the Giants. The Dodgers initiated the scoring in the first with a double by Bill Russell and single by Joe Simpson. Successive singles by Jerry Grote, Hough and Davey Lopes added the other run in the fourth.

Dennis Lewallyn, who replaced Hough, gave up a homer by Willie McCovey in the sixth. The round-tripper was the 28th of the season for McCovey and 493rd of his career, tying him with Lou Gehrig for 12th place on the major leagues' all-time list. [The Sporting News]
