| A three-run homer by Carlton Fisk in the third inning propelled the Red Sox to a 6-3 victory over the Yankees in opener of a showdown series. The Yankees, who saw their American League East Division lead trimmed to 3½ games, closed to within one run in the eighth when Dave Kingman belted his third homer in three games.
