It was Willie McCovey Day at Candlestick Park and the veteran slugger put a perfect ending to it by stroking a two-out, ninth-inning single to score Derrel Thomas from third and give the Giants a 3-2 triumph over the Reds. Thomas began the winning rally with a one-out single and went to third one out later on Bill Madlock's infield chopper. Bob Knepper went the distance for the sixth time. [The Sporting News]
