Dave Kingman smashed his first two A. L. homers, including a drive in the seventh inning when the Angels erupted for eight runs to defeat the Rangers, 12-7. Kingman connected for the first time with a man on base in the third. The Rangers had two homers by Kurt Bevacqua and one by Willie Horton in taking a 7-4 lead before the Angels exploded. Before being knocked out, Gaylord Perry struck out eight to raise his career total to 2,823, good for fourth place ahead of Cy Young on the major leagues' all-time list.

However, Jim Umbarger, who replaced Perry, was the unfortunate loser. Tony Solaita homered with a man on base and Thad Bosley doubled to chase Perry. Umbarger retired one batter and was removed after walking Rance Mulliniks, who later scored to become the tie-breaking run. Kingman capped the outburst with his second two-run homer of the game.
