. . . where the 1970s live forever!
Ron Guidry pitched a five-hitter and Mickey Rivers rapped a decisive two-run homer as the Yankees increased their East Division lead to 2½ games with a 4-2 victory over the Red Sox. The Red Sox scored their runs off Guidry in the second inning. Carl Yastrzemski tripled and crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Guidry then walked Carlton Fisk and George Scott in succession and Butch Hobson followed with a single for his 100th RBI of the season.

The Yankees pushed over their first run off Mike Paxton in the fourth on a single by Thurman Munson, two-out force by Chris Chambliss and singles by Graig Nettles and Lou Piniella. Bucky Dent led off the fifth with a single and Rivers put the Yankees ahead with his homer. With one out, Munson singled to kayo Paxton. Jim Willoughby relieved and got Reggie Jackson to ground into a forceout, but Chambliss doubled to drive in an insurance run. The crowd of 55,269 at game set a regular-season attendance record for remodeled Yankee Stadium. [The Sporting News]
