George Foster, who hit his 44th homer of the season with a man on base in the first inning, also singled in the seventh and drove in what proved to be the Reds' winning run in a 4-3 victory over the Expos. After Foster's blast in the first, the Reds added a run in the fourth on singles by Dan Driessen and Johnny Bench and a grounder by Mike Lum.

After Foster's single in the seventh scored Fred Norman to put the Reds ahead, 4-1, the Expos rallied for two runs in the ninth, but their potential tying run was cut off at the plate. When Tony Perez doubled, Warren Cromartie tried to score from first base, but he was nailed on center fielder Cesar Geronimo's throw to Dave Concepcion and the shortstop's relay to catcher Bench.
