Dennis Eckersley, who had lost two previous starts against the Athletics this season, made sure it didn't happen again by allowing only three hits and pitching the Indians to a 4-1 victory. The A's counted their run in the second inning on a single by Sheldon Mallory, a stolen base and double by Larry Murray.

The Indians tied the score in the third and forged ahead in the seventh when Jim Norris singled, stole second, stopped at third on a single by Ron Pruitt and came home on a sacrifice fly by Fred Kendall. Rico Carty doubled and Pruitt singled in the ninth to plate a pair of insurance runs. [The Sporting News]
