Tom Seaver, performing at Shea Stadium for the first time since being traded by the Mets June 15, held his former teammates to six hits and pitched the Reds to a 5-1 victory. Seaver, who received a standing ovation from the crowd of 46,265, struck out 11.

Steve Henderson, who came to the Mets in the deal with the Reds, collected two hits off Seaver. The Reds nicked Jerry Koosman for a run in the first inning on a double by Pete Rose and single by George Foster. Seaver doubled in the fifth and crossed the plate on a single by Rose.
