Rookie righthander Don Aase, with relief help from Bill Campbell in the last two innings, gained his third straight victory as the Red Sox defeated the Athletics, 2-1, to extend their winning streak to nine games. The A's, who lost their eighth in a row, scored in the first on a double by Rodney Scott and single by Manny Sanguillen. The Red Sox knotted the count with a pass to Rick Miller, infield out by Carlton Fisk and single by Butch Hobson in the second before putting over the deciding run in the fifth when Fred Lynn tripled and Jim Rice singled.
