Bake McBride, who returned to regular action for the first time since suffering a bruised rib July 27, rapped a run-scoring single in the 10th inning to give the Phillies a 2-1 victory over the Padres. The first mid-week day game of the Phillies' home season drew a crowd of 34,868.

The Phillies loaded the bases in the first inning but scored only one run on a wild pitch by Dave Freisleben. The Padres tied the score in the third when Tucker Ashford singled and Gene Richards doubled. In the 10th, with Dan Spillner on the mound for the Padres, Ted Sizemore singled and Tommy Hutton sacrificed. Jerry Martin then ran for Sizemore and scored on McBride's single. [The Sporting News]
