After being shut out by Mario Soto for 7 2/3 innings, the Cubs took advantage of the rookie's sudden loss of control and scored five runs to defeat the Reds, 5-2. Soto held a 1-0 lead and had not issued a pass before walking Bill Buckner. Jerry Morales followed with a single.

Soto then passed Bobby Murcer, Steve Ontiveros and Jose Cardenal in succession, forcing in two runs to put the Cubs ahead, 2-1. Dale Murray relieved and the Cubs then swung the bats, getting one run on a single by Manny Trillo and two on a single by George Mitterwald.
