A fine relief performance by Tom Johnson was rewarded when Roy Smalley homered for the Twins in the 14th inning to beat the Indians, 4-3. Johnson yielded only one hit in the last 4 2/3 innings and picked up his 12th victory. Rod Carew, who had two hits in four trips, homered in the sixth and Craig Kusick drove in two runs with a pinch single to give the Twins a 3-2 lead, but Andre Thornton knotted the count with a round-tripper in the eighth.
