Nolan Ryan yielded only five singles, but the Red Sox bunched three hits with two walks for three runs in the second inning and defeated the Angels, 3-0. Luis Tiant and Bob Stanley combined in pitching the shutout.

Tiant was forced to leave the mound with two out in the seventh after being hit on the right thumb by a drive off the bat of Rance Mulliniks. The Red Sox' scoring rally against Ryan began with a pass to George Scott, who scored on singles by Carlton Fisk and Butch Hobson.
