With the support of homers by Jason Thompson and Milt May, Dave Rozema gained his first victory since June 7, pitching the Tigers past the Yankees, 5-1. Thompson's round-tripper accounted for the Tigers' initial run in the second inning.

May led off the sixth with his circuit clout and before the inning ended the Tigers added three more runs on five singles, one of them by Thompson for his second RBI of the game. The Yankees picked up their tally in the home half of the sixth, but Rozema squelched the rally by getting Thurman Munson to ground into a double play. [The Sporting News]
