Larry Dierker gained his first victory since May 27 with the help of Rawly Eastwick, who pitched the last two innings, when the Cardinals defeated the Cubs, 3-1. The Cards got off to a quick start in the first inning, counting twice off Mike Krukow.

Garry Templeton singled, stole second and scored on a double by Tony Scott, After a balk moved Scott to third, Ted Simmons drove in the second run with an infield hit. The Cubs picked up their tally in the second on a triple by Bobby Murcer and sacrifice fly by Jerry Morales, but the Cards iced their victory with a marker in the eighth on singles by Keith Hernandez and Mike Anderson around a sacrifice by Ken Reitz.
