. . . where the 1970s live forever!
Mike Schmidt tied the N. L. record for most homers in June, hitting his 14th of the month, as the Phillies defeated the Pirates, 8-1. The record was set by Ralph Kiner with the Pirates in June, 1947. The Phillies sent Steve Carlton on his way to victory with four runs in the first inning on a triple by Bake McBride, singles by Larry Bowa and Schmidt, a sacrifice fly by Greg Luzinski and homer by Garry Maddox. Schmidt's blow came in the fourth with a man on base. Phil Garner homered for the Pirates' run. [The Sporting News]
