Lee Mazzilli scored from third base on a slow roller by pinch-hitter Mike Vail in the ninth inning to bring the Mets a 4-3 victory over the Expos. John Stearns, hitting safely in his 12th straight game, smashed a homer in the fifth, his ninth of the season, setting a Mets' record for most homers by a catcher. Duffy Dyer hit eight in 1972.

In the ninth, Mazzilli doubled and advanced on a scarifice by Joel Youngblood. Vail then tapped to Wayne Garrett and the third baseman, with no chance for a play at the plate, had to settle for throwing out the batter at first base. [The Sporting News]
